The Oglethorpe men's soccer team completed a perfect SAA regular season campaign and extended its overall conference unbeaten streak to 21 games Friday night in Mount Berry, Georgia, defeating Berry 2-0 to close out the regular season. With the result, the Stormy Petrels improved to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in SAA play, and extended their overall winning streak to 10 games.
The Petrels got a dominating performance on the evening, outshooting Berry 20-6 and taking seven corner kicks to the home side's one. They broke through in the 18th minute as junior forward Gabriel Alvarez tallied off of a corner kick to give his team a 1-0 advantage. The Petrels continued to dominate the run of play, but the game went into the halftime break as a 1-goal contest.
Oglethorpe doubled their advantage in the second half, though. Senior forward Devon Patterson got his head to a perfect cross from junior defender Christian Waegelin and turned it into the net in the 56th minute, giving his team a commanding 2-0 lead. The Petrels cruised home from there, outshooting the Vikings 10-5 over the course of the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Scott Zoino earned his sixth shutout of the season with a 4-save performance against the Vikings. Patterson led the team with four shots, putting three on goal, while Alvarez took three shots and put two on goal.
The Petrels put nine shots on goal to Berry's four over the course of the game.
The team now gets set to host a first-round game of the SAA tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27. Holding the top seed in the tournament, Oglethorpe will welcome No. 8 seed Hendrix to the Oglethorpe Track and Field at a time to be announced. If they win that game, they'll move on to host the final two rounds of the SAA Men's Soccer Championship for the third straight season.
