Men's Tennis Earns 8-1 Victory over LaGrange on Senior Day
The Oglethorpe men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over LaGrange on a beautiful day on the Howell Courts Tuesday afternoon. Before the match, Judd Motz was honored for Senior Day, and the celebration continued as the match went on.
The Stormy Petrels swept all three doubles matches to stake a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Motz and sophomore Dustin Bowie picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Richard Johnson and freshman Walker Benson cruised at No. 2, 8-1. Junior Michael Santaloci and freshman Calvin Schneider battled to a 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 3 doubles to secure the sweep of doubles play.
In singles, Motz picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1. Johnson came back from dropping the first set to win at No. 3, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). Benson and sophomore Zoe Raymond won in straight sets at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Meanwhile, Santaloci defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell commented after the match: "The men played well against a much improved LaGrange team. We got some momentum when we won the tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles. Our depth at the back end of the lineup was once again a big key. It was also great to have Judd Motz get wins in both singles and doubles on Senior Day."
The win improves the Petrels' overall record to 11-6. Their final two regular season matches will be on the Howell Courts this weekend. They will host Centre on Saturday and No. 22 Sewanee on Sunday.
