Men's Tennis Earns 6-3 Victory over Centre
The Oglethorpe men's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over the Centre Colonels on Saturday afternoon at the Howell Courts. The Stormy Petrels pulled out to a 2-1 lead after doubles. They would lose the first two single matches, but would finish by winning the final four singles contests.
Oglethorpe senior Judd Motz and sophomore Dustin Bowie lost the first match of doubles, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, junior Michael Santaloci and freshman Calvin Schnieder earned an 8-4 win. Junior Richard Johnson and freshman Walker Benson won 8-4 at No.3.
At Nos. 4 and 5 singles, Benson and sophomore Zoe Raymond won in dominating fashion, both winning 6-2 in first set and 6-1 in the second. Santaloci cruised by his opponent to clinch the match for the Petrels, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Motz lost his first set 7-6 and then came back to win the second set 6-4, forcing a third. In that final frame, Motz battled and had an opportunity to win, holding match point at 10-9 and 11-10 during the third-set supertiebreak. Nevertheless, Motz lost 14-12. At No.2, Bowie lost 6-4, 7-5 despite being ahead 5-2 in the second set. Johnson at No. 3 lost his first set 6-4, but won his second 6-3, forcing a third set where he won 10-7 on a supertiebreak.  .
Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell had this to say after the match: "Fortunately, we again played good doubles in taking the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. I knew our depth would be the key as we took Nos. 6, 5 and 4 singles to clinch the match. I was very pleased that Richard Johnson came back from a set down to win. Both Motz and Bowie are completing hard and peaking at the right time. Judd lost a tough one against a very strong player, but he looks good going into the conference tournament. This was a needed win for us and the guys got the job done!"
The win improved the Petrels to 12-6 on the season and 3-3 in the SAA. The next match against Sewanee on Sunday has been canceled due to inclement weather, meaning the Petrels will next take the court in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on Friday for their opening round SAA Tournament match.
