The Oglethorpe men's tennis team completed a solid weekend at the John McWilliams Fall Invitational at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Alabama. They earned the men's Team Sportsmanship Award at the tournament, as voted by coaches of the other four teams, and got some outstanding results.
Sophomore Walker Benson got to the final of the men's main draw, but fell to a player from Point. Senior Rhys Richardson won Draw 2, while fellow senior Richard Johnson finished fourth. Junior Zoe Raymond made the final of Draw 3, while senior Michael Santaloci finished in third place in Draw 4, sophomore Calvin Schneider finished second in Draw 5, and freshman Connor Sisson defeated teammate Noah Offutt to win Draw 6.
In doubles, Benson and Johnson fell in the final of the main draw, while Richardson and Raymond won Draw 2, and freshman John Bielicki and Offutt won Draw 3.
"It was a great beginning of this season," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "Even better than the on-court success was being voted as the winner of the Team Sportsmanship Award by our peers. We had terrific efforts from everyone. The new players handled their first matches with poise and confidence. Our upperclassmen showed solid improvement. We are going to have a fun season!"
The Stormy Petrels will be back in action Sept. 21 through 23 at the ITA South Regional Championships in Rome, Georgia.
Day 2 Recap
The Oglethorpe men's tennis team continued onto Day 2 of the John McWilliams Fall Invitational at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Alabama, Saturday, and it was an outstanding day, highlighted by sophomore Walker Benson advancing to Sunday's singles tournament final.
Benson defeated Davis Plummer from Millsaps in the semifinal round to advance to the singles final on Sunday. Outside of that, though, the Petrels swept the first round of singles play, with victories by Benson, senior Rhys Richardson, junior Zoe Raymond, sophomore Calvin Schneider, freshman Connor Sisson and freshman Noah Offutt all earning victories and advancing to the finals of their brackets. Meanwhile, freshman Greyson Doscotch and senior Richard Johnson are both in consolation finals on Sunday, as is senior Michael Santaloci.
Benson will play for the men's singles championship at the tournament Sunday afternoon, with a variety of singles and doubles play to wrap up the tournament.
Day 1 Recap
The Oglethorpe men's tennis team got their weekend started Friday at the John McWilliams Fall Invitational at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Alabama. The 3-day tournament featured players and doubles teams from Oglethorpe, Huntingdon, LaGrange, Millsaps and Point.
The day featured a variety of doubles matches. A doubles team of sophomore Walker Benson and senior Richard Johnson won their match, 8-3, over a Huntingdon team to start the day. Meanwhile, the team of senior Rhys Richardson and junior Zoe Raymond took their match 8-3, and while Raymond took another match with freshman Greyson Doscotch over Millsaps, 8-5. Senior Michael Santaloci and freshman Connor Sisson took a doubles match, 8-2, as well.
The Petrels will be back at Lagoon Park on Saturday, when the bulk of the singles compeition will take place.
