Men's Tennis at ITA South Regional Championships (Day 2)

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team continued their weekend at the ITA South Regional Championships Saturday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in northwest Georgia. For the second straight day, members of the team competed in a variety of singles and doubles competition against other schools in the South region.

In the B doubles draw, sophomore Calvin Schneider picked up right where he left off on Friday, winning his quarterfinal match against LaGrange's Will Thompson 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) to advance to the semifinals later in the morning. He saw tough competition in that semifinal, though, and fell 6-2, 6-2 to Emory's Alec Rabinowitz. 

In the C singles draw, senior Michael Santaloci advanced all the way to the final with a stellar 6-1, 6-2 win over LaGrange's Caleb Edde, followed by a similar victory over Sewanee's Hamza Khan in the semifinals. Freshman Spencer Horton won another match, as well, as he took out Sewanee's Meade Olson in three sets in the quarterfinals, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). He eventually fell to Sewanee's Michael Tefel in the semifinals.

Freshman Greyson Doscotch advanced with a pair of victories in the main consolation bracket, beating Berry's Jordan Crance 6-4, 6-2, then taking out Sewanee's Dane Hawthorne 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (14-12). 

Junior Zoe Raymond won the B draw consolation, defeating Covenant's Benjamin Luke 6-0, 6-2 for the title. Meanwhile, freshman Connor Sisson won the C draw consolation, defeating Belhaven's Juan Pable Velasco 6-0, 6-3.

On the doubles side, Santaloci and Sisson won the B doubles consolation title.

The Petrels will next be in action with an exhibition match against SCAD Atlanta Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. That will close out their fall season.

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team got their stay at the ITA South Regional Championships started Friday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in northwest Georgia, competing in a variety of draws in both singles and doubles competition.

In the main singles draw, sophomore Walker Benson took his first-round match against Birmingham-Southern's Alex Wisener, 6-2, 6-0. He then advanced to the second round where he went up against No. 14 seed Antonio Mora of Emory. Benson hung tough throughout, but Mora eventually prevailed, 7-5, 6-3. Elsewhere in the main draw, freshman Greyson Doscotch had a tough first-round matchup, as he was slotted to play the No. 7 seed, Emory's Adrien Bouchet. He fell 6-2, 6-2 in that match. Senior Rhys Richardson had a tough first-round matchup against Emory's Andrew Esses and fell 6-1, 6-2. Senior Richard Johnson matched up against North Carolina Wesleyan's Juan Vallejo and lost 6-1, 6-0.

Doscotch won in the consolation draw, however, defeating Centre's Matthew Bulow 6-1, 7-5. He'll take on Berry's Jordan Crance in the consolation second round on Saturday. Elsewhere in the consolation round, Johnson fell 6-2, 6-3 to Brandon Beck of Millsaps, while Richardson fell to Centre's Arpit Mani, 6-3, 7-5.

In the main doubles draw, Johnson and Benson defeated a team from Berry 8-2 in the first round before falling 8-6 to North Carolina Wesleyan in the second round. Elsewhere, Doscotch and sophomore Calvin Schneider fell 8-3 to another tandem from North Carolina Wesleyan, while Richardson and junior Zoe Raymond dropped their first-round matchup to another North Carolina Wesleyan duo.

Doscotch and Schneider won their first-round consolation draw matchup, 8-1, over a team from Piedmont, while Raymond and Richardson took out a team from Guilford, 9-7. Doscotch and Schneider will battle a team from Sewanee in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon, while Raymond and Richardson will go against a team from Millsaps.

In the men's B draw, Schneider won a couple of matches and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning. He knocked off Chase Morris from Piedmont, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round, then did the same to Rhodes' Ryan Crump, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round. Meanwhile, Raymond fell 6-0, 6-2 in his first-round matchup against Emory's Connor Genschaw. He then won 6-0, 6-1 over Jonas Frank of Berry in the consolation round.

The Petrels have two competitors in the quarterfinals of the singles C draw on Saturday morning. Senior Michael Santaloci defeated Huntingdon's Kevaughnte Merrion 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and Centre's Josh Joiner 6-2, 6-2 in the second, while freshman Spencer Horton took out Berry's Ben Knight 6-3, 6-1 in the first and Piedmont's Dalton Patterson 6-3, 6-1 in the second. Freshman Connor Sisson fell in a marathon against Sewanee's Michael Tefel, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0(6). Sisson did get a 6-1, 6-1 win over Huntingdon's Carson Sands in the first round of the consolation draw, and advanced to the consolation semifinals on Saturday.

In the B doubles draw, Horton and Sisson fell to a duo from Rhodes in a tiebreaker, 9-8(4), and will play in the first round of the consolation draw on Saturday.
