The Oglethorpe men's tennis team beat the Covenant Scots 8-1 on Saturday afternoon, earning a season-opening victory with an excellent performance at the Howell Courts.
The Petrels swept the doubles competition, giving themselves a 3-0 lead headed into singles. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Walker Benson and senior Michael Santaloci and the No. 2 tandem of senior Richard Johnson and freshman Connor Sisson both earned 8-4 victories. Santaloci and Benson were down 3-0 in their match before turning the tide. The No. 3 duo of junior Zoe Raymond and sopohomore Calvin Schneider prevailed 8-2.
Oglethorpe continued to dominate in the singles competition, winning five of the six singles matches. Benson won 6-4, 6-3; Santaloci won 6-3, 6-1; Raymond prevailed 6-1, 6-1; senior Matthew Magee came through 6-2, 6-0; and Schneider won 6-0, 6-1 at the one, two, four, five and six slots, respectively. The lone loss came from Johnson, who fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
"This was a nice win to start the season," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "We showed a lot of depth throughout the lineup, and I look forward to seeing what this group can do as we move ahead into the season!"
With the Guilford match scheduled for Sunday canceled due to impending rain, the Petrels will next take the court on Saturday, Feb. 23, when Rose-Hulman visits the Howell Courts at 10 a.m. Division I Citadel will also be in town to take on the Petrels in an exhibition match Sunday at noon.
