Men's tennis secures third place in SAA with 7-2 win at Berry

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team closed its regular season on a high note Monday evening in Rome, coming back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to sweep all six singles matches and win 7-2. The victory ensured the Stormy Petrels of third place in the SAA at 5-2 in league play and 11-6 overall. They'll hold the No. 3 seed in the first round of the SAA Tournament on Friday and take on No. 6 seed Birmingham-Southern in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Petrels bounced back from a losing cause in doubles to seriously turn the tables in singles. They got a quick victory from senior Michael Santaloci at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2, tying the score of the dual match. Sophomore Calvin Schneider did the same at No. 6, winning 6-2, 6-4 and giving Oglethorpe the lead. Sophomore Walker Benson fought off a tough early challenge from his opponent in the top-line singles match, winning 7-5, 6-1 and bringing his team to within one match of clinching victory on the day. They clinched the win shortly thereafter, as senior Matthew Magee took down his match 6-4, 6-2 out of the No. 5 slot for Oglethorpe's fifth point.

In doubles play, Santaloci and Magee picked up the lone victory of the session when they won 8-3 on the third line. The top two doubles teams fell, though, putting Oglethorpe in danger headed into singles. Benson and Schneider fell 8-6 in a tiebreak on the two line, while senior Richard Johnson and freshman Connor Sisson dropped their top-line match 8-5.

Johnson and junior Zoe Raymond each came back from losses in the first set to win their next two in decisive fashion to close out singles play after the match had been decided.
