The Oglethorpe men's track and field team took eighth place this weekend at the Southern Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, getting outstanding performances from a variety of people over the 2-day event.
The highest finish for the Petrels at the event occurred with the 4-by-400 meter relay team, as freshmen Marcus Alvarez, Christopher Williams and Justin Hazel combined with junior Rodrigo Meade to finish third with a time of 3 minutes, 33.66 seconds.
Several Petrels finished fourth in various events, as well. Alvarez came in fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.15 seconds, while Meade finished fourth in the 800-meter run in 1:57.39. Freshman Jacob Hadden came in fourth in the 5,000-meter run, setting a school record in the process. He finished with a time of 15:32.09. Sophomore Mateo Villa placed eighth in the same event, coming home with a time of 16:02.4. Freshman Christopher Wiliams finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 57.69 seconds.
The Petrels had two point-scorers in the 400-meter dash, as Alvarez finished fifth in 49.96 seconds and Hazel came in eighth in 51.02 seconds. Williams also finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.84 seconds.
Hadden currently holds the lead among SAA performances in the 5,000 meters, while Alvarez holds the lead in the 400 meters and is among the top competitors in the 200.
The Petrels will get back to action March 23 and 24, when they'll head across town for the Emory Classic.
