Freshman Jacob Hadden of the Oglethorpe men's track and field team earned SAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday, as voted by the league's coaches, for his efforts at the Southern Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, over the weekend. It marks his first career weekly SAA track and field honor after winning the Runner of the Week award twice during cross country season.
Hadden had a record-setting performance in the 5,000-meter run at the Southern Invitational. He finished third among collegiate runners and first among Division III athletes on Saturday at the event. He came across the line in a time of 15 minutes, 32.09 seconds. That mark set a new school record in the discipline, besting the previous record of 15:48 set by John Lowe all the way back in 1978.
"I'm very proud of Jake earning Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the 5,000 meters this past weekend," said Oglethorpe head coach Kirk Shellhouse. "His hard work ethic and determination have allowed him to accomplish many great things this year. I'm excited to see what he can accomplish in the future with this program."
Hadden and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will next be in action March 23 and 24, when they head across town for the 2-day Emory Classic.
