Junior Rodrigo Meade of the Oglethorpe men's track and field team has been named the SAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Berry Field Day Invitational in Mount Berry over the weekend. It marks the first career SAA weekly honor for Meade, and serves as the third time this season that a member of the team has earned the honor (Oz Faal, March 28; Jacob Hadden, March 14).
Meade had a tremendous set of performances at the Berry Field Day Invitational Friday and Saturday. He started the weekend with a fifth overall (fourth amongst Division III) finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 4.08 seconds. This bested his previous Oglethorpe school record and currently ranks second in the SAA. Meade proceeded to run the 800 meters the next day and finished 10th (fifth amongst D3) in the event. He concluded his weekend with a leg in the 4-x-400 meter relay in which Oglethorpe finished fourth overall and as the best Division III team at the meet.
"I'm super proud of Rodrigo's accolade for the week!" said Oglethorpe head coach Kirk Shellhouse. "He has been working hard this year to improve drastically in his skill-set, and it is starting to pay off. We can see week-to-week that he competes hard and is one of the toughest athletes this program has ever seen. Rodrigo did a great job placing well this past weekend and racing smart for all three events! I cannot wait to see how he finishes the rest of the season."
Meade and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will next head to Sewanee, Tennessee, on Friday evening for the Mountain Laurel Twilight Invitational. They'll head back to the same venue the following weekend for the SAA Track and Field Championships.
