The Oglethorpe cross country teams competed Saturday at the Berry Invitational in Mount Berry, Georgia, with the men's team finishing fifth at the event. The Stormy Petrels competed against 20 teams at the event, and came in ahead of all but two Division III schools, as Berea and Emory finished ahead of them.
Sophomore Jacob Hadden finished 15th among individuals, posting a time of 26 minutes, 13.08 seconds on the eight-kilometer course. He finished third amongst Division III individuals, with only a pair from Berea besting him. Freshman Hayden Guthrie finished 37th in 26:57.48, while sophomore Bill Lester came in 45th at 27:11.38. Junior Mateo Villa came in 49th at 27:14.68 and freshman Goldston rounded out the Oglethorpe scorers with a 57th place finish in 27:28.61.
Other Petrels who finished in the top half of the 213-runner field included sophomore Alex Araya, who finished 65th; senior Rodrigo Meade, who finished 70th; junior Nick Berardi, who came in 84th; and freshman Thomas Ridley, who recorded an 89th-place finish. All four posted personal-best times.
On the women's side, the Petrels had two athletes finish in the top half of the field. Senior Kara Jones came in 57th with a time of 25:20.23, while sophomore Reagan Goodwin posted a 59th-place finish in 25:25.11 on the six-kilometer course.
The Petrels will be back in action on Oct. 27, when they travel to Memphis, Tennessee, for the SAA Cross Country Championships on the Shelby Farms course. The Petrels have experience there, as they competed in the Rhodes Invitational in September at the same venue.
