The Oglethorpe University women's basketball team defeated East Texas Baptist University on Sunday afternoon on Pinholster Court, 84-73. The Petrels used a swarming defense that forced 28 East Texas turnovers and a woeful 21 of 76 shooting performance.
Clinging to a two point lead with six minutes remaining in the first half, Oglethorpe closed the half on a spurt to open up a 43-37 halftime lead. The Tigers drew back to within two points at the 16:36 mark of the second half but that's when Oglethorpe went on a 15-5 run to open up a double-digit lead (62-50) they never relinquished.
Freshman Mareva Bone led all scorers and four Petrels in double-figures in the contest with 25 points to go along with 7 rebounds. Sarah Jones added 13 points and 5 rebounds and Chelsea MacDonald and Katie Weeks each posted 12 points. Senior Taymah Jones continued her good work on the glass, collecting 10 rebounds on the afternoon to lead the team.
Oglethorpe connected on 31 of 39 free throw attempts (80%) in a game that was slowed by 30 fouls committed by the Tigers.
With the result, Oglethorpe raises their record to 5-3 on the season and will have a week off before hosting the Holiday Classic on December 28 and 29. The classic field includes Piedmont, Carthage and the number one ranked Hope College team.
