  • Women's basketball matches best start in program history with 66-40 win over Millsaps

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team matched the best 17-game start in program history Friday night at Dorough Field House, pulling away from the visiting Millsaps Majors in the second half and winning 66-40. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 16-1, matching the mark set by the 2008-09 squad. The Petrels, ranked 23rd in the D3hoops.com poll and 12th in the coaches poll, also moved to a perfect 6-0 in SAA play.

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team broke into the D3hoops.com women's top 25 on Tuesday, entering the poll at No. 23 and marking the Stormy Petrels' first appearance in the ranking since the end of the 2008-09 season. They dropped a single spot in the latest NCAA Division III top 25 coaches' poll, falling from a tie for 11th to 12th by themselves. That served as the seventh time this season that the team cracked the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) rankings.

With the win, the Stormy Petrels improved to 15-1 on the season overall and a perfect 5-0 in SAA play. They extend the program's best start to a season since the 2008-09 team began 16-1.

The victory extended Oglethorpe's best start to a season since 2008-09 and kept the team undefeated in SAA play at 4-0.

It marked the high-water mark in the poll for the Stormy Petrels, who previously topped out at No. 16. It also served as the sixth week in which the team found themselves in the coaches top 25.

The Stormy Petrels jumped out to a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and eventually pushed their advantage to as many as 24 points in the rout of the visiting Eagles.

The Stormy Petrels outlasted their opponent in a foul-filled game that went back and forth, seeing six lead changes and five ties along with 56 total fouls.
  • Women's basketball holds off LeTourneau 89-85 in overtime

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team found themselves locked in a tight game with the LeTourneau YellowJackets Monday evening to get their week at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Classic started. The home side outscored the visitors 16-12 in overtime, though, to secure an 89-85 win over LeTourneau and improve to 9-1 on the season.

They re-entered the poll at No. 20 on Nov. 26. It marked the third time in 2019 that the WBCA ranked the Stormy Petrels and equaled the highest ranking the team has attained so far this season. The organization ranked the Petrels 19th in the preseason, as well.
  • Women's basketball withstands late Emory comeback, holds on to win 76-72

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team never trailed Tuesday evening in a 76-72 victory over crosstown rival Emory, but the game proved far from easy for the Stormy Petrels. They held a 17-point fourth-quarter lead only to watch the visiting Eagles storm back to tie the game with 18 seconds remaining. Oglethorpe got two clutch free throws from senior guard Morgan Grindle and a big steal from sophomore guard Amy Vazquez in the final 15 seconds to secure the victory, though, improving to 7-1 on the season.

The Stormy Petrels outscored Covenant 46-25 in the first half and 24-12 in the third quarter to pull out to a huge lead and cruise to victory.

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team completed a perfect weekend at the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic in Danville, Kentucky, Saturday, handing the Otterbein Cardinals their first loss of the season 67-58. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 5-1 on the season.

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss Friday with a 73-53 win over Randolph-Macon on Day 2 of the Comfort Suites Classic Saturday in Emory, Virginia. The Stormy Petrels outscored the Yellow Jackets 25-7 in the third quarter en route to 20-point victory, which improved the team to 3-1 on the season.
