The Oglethorpe women's golf team is set to get their season underway this weekend at the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Alabama. The Stormy Petrels are receiving votes in the coaches' poll coming into this season, and will face off against No. 10 Berry, No. 13 Huntingdon, No. 18 Washington and Lee, No. 19 Rhodes, No. 20 Sewanee, No. 23 Centre, and a Birmingham-Southern team receiving votes at the tournament, as well as in-state foe Piedmont and SAA foe Millsaps.
The Stormy Petrels return All-SAA First Team honorees Angel Sanchez and Ana Garcia to a team that finished second at the SAA Championships in April, the highest finish in the program's SAA history. Sanchez also earned All-Region honors from the Women's Golf Coaches Association.
The Petrels also return seniors Hailey Willman and Katie Hanley, and welcome three new golfers into their freshman class. Juniors Mara Tiger and Maria Luisa Ferreyros also make a return for the Petrels, as do sophomores Alivia Mattiace, Emma Meadows and Melissa Wilson.
The fall schedule gets started in Montgomery, then the Petrels travel to Lexington, Virginia, on Oct. 7 and 8 for the General's Invitational, hosted by Washington and Lee. They'll round out October with the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida, Oct. 14 through 16, and the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Georgia, Oct. 22 and 23.
That will lead into the spring, where the rubber really meets the road for the Petrels. They'll make their usual stops at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational and their own Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational before heading to Bessemer, Alabama, for the BSC Southern Showdown in April, leading into the SAA Championships back at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee, where the tournament was held last year.
The Petrels finished seventh at last year's Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate, and will look to improve on that this time around. Afterwards, it'll be a busy October for the Stormy Petrels.
