The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team traveled to Danville, Kentucky, to face SAA rival Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Stormy Petrels found themselves down 5-0 within the first six minutes of play, and things didn't improve much from there, as the homestanding Colonels came away with a 20-1 victory. The Petrels are now 0-4 for the season and 0-2 in the SAA.
The Colonels opened up the game winning the draw control, which led to them scoring within the first 15 seconds. They would continue their scoring run by recording seven goals before the Petrels would answer. The first and only goal by the Petrels was from sophomore attacker Elena Gierok at the 12:04 mark of the first half. The Colonels ended the half scoring six more goals, pushing their lead out to 13-1. Sophomore goalie Jordan Chandler tallied nine saves in the first half. The Colonels collected 18 ground balls while the Petrels only managed eight over the first period. Also, the Colonels recorded 28 shots compared to four by the Petrels.
The Colonels started the second half in similar fashion, earning three goals in the first seven minutes of play. The Petrels then held the Colonels scoreless for the next 10 minutes. The Petrels couldn't capitalize with any goals during this span, though. The Colonels would go on to continue to extend their lead out by scoring four goals in the final 15 minutes of the game.
Oglethorpe finished the game forcing 20 turnovers, but they also gave the ball up 22 times. Additionally, the Petrels lost on ground balls, as the Colonels outscooped them 24-12. Finally, the Petrels successfully cleared the ball 50 percent of the time, going 9-for-18.
The Petrels will return home to take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. Following that matchup, the Petrels will return to SAA play, challenging Sewanee at the Oglethorpe Track and field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
