The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team enjoyed an outstanding outing Friday afternoon, cruising to a 21-1 victory over the visiting Montreat College Cavaliers and improving to 2-1 on the young season. It marked the best record through three games in program history.
The Stormy Petrels jumped all over the Cavaliers early, scoring 10 consecutive goals over the opening 10 minutes of the game. Montreat responded with their lone goal of the contest at that point, but the Petrels continued to pour it on throughout the remainder of the opening period and led 16-1 at the break. They slowed down in the second half, but still outscored their opponent 5-0 over the final 30 minutes.
Senior midfielder Madison Goss scored three goals for the Petrels and caused four turnovers while freshman attacker Audrey Mahoney added three of her own to go with five ground balls. Senior attacker Clarissa Hopkins, senior midfielder Caroline Chamberlain, junior midfielder Jill Czaplinski, freshman attacker Ahjinah Hunter, and freshman midfielders Tatyana Harris and Samanda Cox scored a pair of goals apiece. Cox collected six ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Oglethorpe outshot the Cavaliers 29-3 on goal, won 18 of 24 draw controls, doubled up Montreat in ground balls (28-14), and were successful on 11 of 12 clear attempts. They also converted on 4 of 10 free-position shots.
The Petrels will be back in action this weekend, when they stay in-state for a neutral site game in West Point. They'll take on Dallas at 1 p.m. Sunday from there, then travel to take on Piedmont Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a makeup of a game postponed a week before.
