The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Birmingham-Southern Panthers 13-3 Saturday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in SAA play.
The visiting Panthers outscored Oglethorpe 9-2 in the opening half of play. They scored the first three goals of the game before senior attacker Madison Goss answered at the 24:05 mark of the first half. Birmingham-Southern went back on the war path, though, scoring five straight goals to take an 8-1 lead with 5:05 left until halftime. The Petrels answered again with a marker from freshman midfielder Tatyana Harris, but the Panthers led by seven at the break.
In the second half, Birmingham-Southern scored four goals to build their largest lead of the game, 13-2. Oglethorpe got one back late when senior attacker Clarissa Hopkins struck off an assist by junior attacker Samantha Chap. However, the Panthers prevailed by a 10-goal margin.
Birmingham-Southern outshot Oglethorpe 32-14 on goal. The teams were even with nine draw controls apiece, but the Panthers forced 11 more turnovers and scooped three more ground balls than did Oglethorpe.
The Petrels will close their home conference slate on April 6 at noon. They'll welcome Rhodes to the Oglethorpe Track and Field on that date before returning for a Senior Day exhibition game against Georgia Tech the following day.
