The Oglethorpe women's tennis team got their spring break trip off to an outstanding start Monday morning as they beat the Belhaven Blazers 8-1 in Lakeland, Florida. With the win, the Stormy Petrels improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Petrels got off to an excellent start in doubles, sweeping all three matches. It wasn't easy, though, as two of them came down to the wire. The top-line team of junior Hannah Dattilo and Shannon Cruz fell behind 4-2 before rallying for six of the final eight games to take the match 8-6. Senior Delaney Abood and sophomore Lisette Phillips withstood a comeback to force a tiebreaker at No. 3, but they prevailed 7-4 in the extra session. Senior Charlotte Disley and junior Elizabeth Bielicki won with more ease at No. 2, taking it 8-2 to put the Petrels up 3-0.
The Petrels quickly put the match away after that, as Abood took her No. 4 match 6-0, 6-1. Cruz clinched the dual match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2, putting her team up 5-0.
The best match of the day came at top-line singles, where Dattilo found herself down 6-3, 3-1 in the second set. She stormed back to win the final five games of the second frame and force a 10-point tiebreaker for the match, then won the tiebreaker 10-7 to secure the victory. Bielicki won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 while Phillips prevailed 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. The lone Petrel loss of the morning came at No. 3 singles, where Disley lost 6-3, 6-4.
The Petrels will be back in action from Orlando Monday night, where they'll take on St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. from the USTA National Campus.

The Petrels took two of the three doubles matches, as Dattilo and Cruz secured an 8-5 win on the top line while Abood and Phllips won by the same score at the No. 3 line. Disley and Bielicki fell at No. 2, but the Petrels took a 2-1 lead into the singles competition.
Oglethorpe came within a point of clinching with outstanding play from their top two singles players. Dattilo won 6-2, 6-2 on the top line and Cruz prevailed 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2, making it 4-1 overall. The Saints got a point closer with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Disley at No. 3, but Bielicki secured the win with a tight two-set battle at No. 5. She won the first set 7-5 then took a second-set tiebreaker 7-5 to win it 7-6 and clinch the dual match 5-2.
After clinching, the Petrels split a pair of third-set tiebreakers. Abood won hers 10-7 after splitting the first two sets 7-5 at No. 3. Phllips fell in a first-set tiebreaker at No. 6, but came back to win the second set 7-5. She fell 11-9 in the third-set 10-point tiebreaker.
The Petrels will be back in action twice on Tuesday. They'll take on Austin at 11:30 a.m. from Casselberry before heading to Altamonte Springs for a battle with Immaculata at 6 p.m.
