The Oglethorpe women's tennis team earned a split of their second full day at spring break in central Florida. They defeated Immaculata 8-1 Tuesday night in Altamonte Springs, but fell 7-2 to former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Austin early Tuesday afternoon in Casselberry. With the results, the Stormy Petrels moved to 5-1 on the season.
The Petrels cruised their way to victory over Immaculata in the evening, bouncing back from their afternoon loss. They swept doubles, as junior Hannah Dattilo and senior Shannon Cruz won 8-1 at No. 1, senior Charlotte Disley and junior Elizabeth Bielicki prevailed 8-2 at No. 2, and senior Delaney Abood and sophomore Lisette Phillips won 8-3 at No. 3.
It continued in much the same fashion in singles. Dattilo won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, Cruz came through 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Abood triumphed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Bielicki prevailed 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5, and Phillips won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
Against the Roos in the afternoon, the Petrels took one of the three doubles matches, with the No. 3 tandem of Abood and Phillips winning 8-6. However, Dattilo and Cruz fell 8-5 at the top line while Bielicki and Disley fell 7-4 in a tiebreaker at No. 2, putting the Petrels behind 2-1.
Phillips won her singles match 6-3, 6-0, but that was all Oglethorpe could muster. Dattilo played some good tennis against the 49th-ranked singles player in the country, Austin's Melody Duong. However, Duong prevailed 7-5, 6-4.
The Petrels will close out their stay in central Florida on Wednesday, when they return to Altamonte Springs to take on Transylvania at noon.
