Women's tennis closes regular season with tight loss at Berry, takes seventh in SAA

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team closed their regular season with a hard-fought match against Berry on the road in Rome Monday evening, but the homestanding Vikings eventually prevailed 5-4 to break a sixth-place tie in the SAA. The Stormy Petrels conclude their regular season at 1-6 in league play and 8-7 overall, good enough for seventh place in the conference standings.

The No. 7 seed Petrels get set to take on No. 2 seed Centre in the first round of the SAA Tournament Friday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Petrels got off to an excellent start in doubles play, taking two of the three matches. Junior Hannah Dattilo and senior Shannon Cruz took down Berry's No. 1 team 8-5, while senior Delaney Abood and sophomore Lisette Phillips took down the No. 3 match 8-6. The second team of senior Charlotte Disley and junior Elizabeth Bielicki dropped their match, but the Petrels held a 2-1 lead headed to singles play.

They extended their advantage with a 6-3, 6-3 win from Phillips at No. 6.

However, the Vikings came back with consecutive wins over Abood at No. 3 and Disley at No. 4, tying the overall score 3-3. The home side added a fourth win, this one 6-4, 6-3 over Cruz at No. 2. That meant the Petrels had to win both of the final two matches still on the court, but both went to third sets, giving Oglethorpe a chance.

Dattilo came back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, tying the dual match 4-4. Bielicki came back from a first-set loss, as well, winning a hard-fought second set 7-5. She fell 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in the end, though.
