Women's tennis competes at ITA South Regional Championships (Day 2)

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team continued their stay at the Rome Tennis Center northwest Georgia Saturday at the ITA Division III South Regional Championships.

Junior Lisette Phillips likely provided the highlight of the day for the Stormy Petrels, advancing all the way to the final of her B singles draw. She took out Sewanee's Sarah Gray 6-1, 6-2 in her semifinal matchup, putting her in the final against another Sewanee Tiger, Alexandra Smyth. In a hard-fought match, Smyth won a first-set tiebreak and went on to take the title, 7-6(5), 6-4. 

Elsewhere on the day, senior Hannah Dattilo won the main singles draw consolation bracket, taking a pair of matches on Saturday to claim that title.

In doubles, freshmen Alyssa Merletti and Alexis Salgueiro advanced to the semifinals of the C doubles draw, falling in that round to a team from Birmingham-Southern featuring Savannah Young and Isabella Lambert, 8-4. Junior Brooke Dotson and sophomore Katie Hunter were in the quarterfinals of the C doubles draw, but they fell 8-2 to Julia Keffer and Erica Rempel of Belhaven.

In the C singles draw, Merletti won her semifinal match Saturday to advance to the final, where she took on Isabella Hutchins of Millsaps. Hutchins won that match to take the title.

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team competed at the ITA Division III South Regional Championships on Friday at the Rome Tennis Center in northwest Georgia.

In the A singles draw, senior Hannah Dattilo fell 6-5, 6-4 to Sewanee's Caroline Adams in the first round. Meanwhile, freshman Kendall Kramer fell to Sewanee's Lilly Stephens 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, as well. 

In the A doubles draw, Dattilo and Kramer fell 8-5 in the first round to Stephens and Abbie Vaughn of Sewanee. 

In one of the B singles draws, junior Lisette Phillips advanced to the semifinals with a pair of victories on Friday. She defeated Belhaven's Courtney Buffington 6-0, 6-1 before taking down Morgan Jenkins of Millsaps 6-0, 6-1. She'll take on the winner of a match between Birmingham-Southern's Emily Enoch and Sewanee's Sarah Gray Saturday at 11 a.m. Senior Ela Bielicki fell to Sewanee's Madeline Cummings 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of her B singles draw. Lisette and Phillips lost 8-4 to Jenkins and Natalie Toups of Millsaps in the first round of the B doubles draw.

In the C singles draw, freshman Alyssa Merletti advanced to the semifinals, where she'll take on Piedmont's Dakota Wilkes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Fellow freshman Alexis Salgueiro fell to Guilford's Claire Rogers in a tight first-round match, losing 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(7). Salgueiro and Merletti advanced to the semifinals of the C doubles draw after defeating a pair from Guilford 8-0 in the first round and a pair from Covenant 8-5 in the quarterfinals. Junior Brooke Dotson and sophomore Katie Hunter advanced to the quarterfinals with a first-round victory over a pairing from Covenant, 8-7(5). The two will now face a pairing from Belhaven in the quarterfinals.

Hunter and junior Maria Berroa lost their first round matches in the D singles draw. Berroa fell to Piedmont's Tyler Perry 6-0, 6-1, while Hunter dropped a three-set thriller to Piedmont's Val Zhurakovskya.
