The Oglethorpe women's track and field team opened their season Sunday at the Emory Crossplex Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, with a meet featuring a third-place finish from junior Arielle Shaw and several school records in the process. The Stormy Petrels came in tied for 23rd in the meet, which featured a variety of Division I and Division II competition.
Shaw led the way for the Petrels on the day, finishing third in her first triple jump competition of the year with a leap of 36 feet, 2.25 inches. It was the highest finish in the discipline by a Division III athlete, and resulted in all six points that the squad scored on the day.
Freshman Sydney Payne performed well in her first collegiate track meet, winning her heat in the shot put and coming in 17th overall at 33-6. Freshman Courtney Stuart set a school indoor record in the pole vault, finishing tied for 11th at 8-2.5. Junior Kara Jones also set a new school record in the 3,000-meter run, finishing 14th in 11 minutes, 7.1 seconds. She got off to a huge start, and her first mile time would've set the school record in the mile run.
"Overall, I was pleased with the effort today from the women's team," said Oglethorpe head coach Kirk Shellhouse. "Arielle got her season off to a solid start with a third-place finish, and we had a couple other performers set school records. Overall, I thought it was a good first outing, and I look forward to seeing this team improve over the course of the season."
The Petrels will next be in action on Feb. 3, when they head to Sewanee, Tennessee, for the Tiger Indoor Invitational.
