The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Oglethorpe senior track and field athlete Arielle Shaw to its indoor All-Region team this week, marking the fourth consecutive time she has earned the honor out of the South/Southeast region for indoor track. Added to her three outdoor All-Region honors, the award gives her seven career All-Region honors total.
Like with the previous six honors, Shaw earned the award for her work in her signature event, the triple jump. She finished with the second-best mark in the South/Southeast region over the course of the indoor season, leaping 36 feet, 9.75 inches at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational on Feb. 15. The jump, which served as the best by an SAA triple jumper during the indoor season, won the event at the Sewanee meet. She came in only two inches behind Emory's Nylo Lindo for second on the regional performance list. The leap also served as the 46th-best mark in Division III over the course of the season.
A total of 1,590 All-Region honors were handed out to 192 different USTFCCCA member institutions. There was a near-even split between the genders as women combined for 804 of the honors, compared to 786 for the men. The top five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each member of the region's top three relay teams.
Shaw will look to continue her high level of competition into the outdoor season, which began Saturday in Mount Berry at the Victor Icebreaker Duals. She got off to a good start there, finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 35-11.5. The season continues Friday and Saturday at the Southern Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
