The Oglethorpe track and field teams competed Friday at the Mountain Laurel Twilight Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee, with both teams finishing fifth at the meet. The women came in fifth out of six teams while the men finished fifth out of five.
The women's side was led by senior Arielle Shaw, who won the triple jump again and bested her previous season-best in the process. Shaw leaped 38 feet, 0.75 inches to win the event by a full two-and-a-half feet over the closest competitor from Emory.
Freshman Sierra Sieracki won the high jump, recording an effort of 4-9.75. She also came in third in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing the race in 18.30 seconds despite it being her first collegiate try at the event.
On the men's side, freshman Toju Etiwe finished second in both the long jump and triple jump. He posted a leap of 21-4 in the former to come away with the best distance by a Division III athlete, then recorded a jump of 42-11.5 in the triple jump.
Freshmen Hayden Guthrie and Aidan Goldston both placed in the 1500 meters. Guthrie finished fourth in 4 minutes, 22.6 seconds, while Goldston came in a few seconds back of that in 4:30.9.
The Petrels will be back in action a week from Friday when they head to Conway, Arkansas, for the SAA Track and Field Championships. The event takes place over two days, April 26 and 27.
