Senior Arielle Shaw of the Oglethorpe women's track and field team qualified for the triple jump competition at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, marking the third time in her four-year career that she's earned her way into the Division III women's triple jump finals.
Shaw earned her third career entry into the competition after also accomplishing the feat in 2016 and 2017. It marked the fifth time in the last six years that the Stormy Petrels placed a competitor in the NCAA Division III women's triple jump competition, with current assistant coach Katy Galli qualifying in 2014 and 2015.
The Petrel athlete leaped 38 feet, 6.75 inches at the Falcon Finale in Montevallo, Alabama, on May 10. It tied for the 21st-best mark of the season in all of Division III (counting only each individual's best performance), and the second-best in the South/Southeast region. With the owners of the top 22 national marks in each individual event earning their way into the national meet on the women's side, that effort put her into the field.
Shaw, who received her Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Oglethorpe's graduation ceremony Saturday morning, earned her first SAA title in her signature event at the SAA Track and Field Championships on April 27, taking the triple jump crown with a leap of 38 feet, 3.5 inches. She easily earned the victory in the event, besting her nearest competitor by almost a foot.
Over the course of the season, she won triple jump competitions at the Mountain Laurel Twilight Invitational, the Emory Classic, the Emory Invitational, the Sewanee Indoor Invitational and the Tiger Indoor Invitational.
Shaw will compete in the triple jump competition at the national meet at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, Saturday at 1:45 p.m.
