Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to Whitworth

The Oglethorpe volleyball team saw their stay at the Emory National Tournament in Atlanta end Saturday without a win, as they fell 3-0 to Whitworth at the Woodruff PE Center on Emory's campus. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 0-7 on the young season.

The Pirates outscored the Petrels 25-17 in the first set, 25-18 in the second, and 25-17 in the third. The Petrels took a 7-4 lead early in the first, but Whitworth quickly tied it and then went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-12 lead. The two teams traded points for awhile from there, but the Pirates closed out the set, 25-17.

The Petrels took an 8-6 lead early in the second set, then went on a 3-point minirun to build a 13-10 edge. However, the Pirates took control of the set from there. They outscored Oglethorpe 14-4 over the remainder of the stanza to win it, 25-18.

Whitworth took a 10-5 lead in the early-going of the third set, but Oglethorpe pulled it back a bit, making the score 12-9. The Pirates went on an 11-5 run from there to build a 23-14 lead, though, and cruised to the 25-17 victory.

Freshman setter Emma Williams led the team with 15 assists while fellow freshman setter Grace Holder tallied 10 of them.

The Petrels have dealt with a difficult early-season schedule, and it doesn't get any easier on Wednesday as they travel to No. 25 Berry for their SAA opener at 6 p.m. After that, they'll continue on the road in-conference, traveling to Tennessee to go against Sewanee at noon Eastern on Saturday and continuing to Danville, Kentucky, to take on Centre at 2 p.m. Sunday.
