Volleyball Sweeps Huntingdon for Third Straight Win

The Oglethorpe volleyball team played their best match of the season so far Thursday night in their home opener at Dorough Field House. The Stormy Petrels ran away from the visiting Huntingdon Hawks early and never let up en route to a 3-0 sweep. The home side won the three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-16, and improved to 3-9 on the season as they head into the second weekend of SAA play.

Huntingdon actually went up early in the first set, as they edged out to a 7-4 lead. The two teams traded points for awhile after that, but Oglethorpe used a 4-1 mini-run to tie the score at 14-14. The 14-13 advantage was the last lead the visitors held in a set the entire match. Oglethorpe finished the set on a 5-1 run to take it 25-19 and take a 1-0 lead.

A 3-point run early in the second set gave Oglethorpe a 6-3 lead, but Huntingdon responded with a 3-point run of their own to make it 8-8. The Petrels quickly took control of the set with a couple of massive runs, though. They reeled off six points in a row to take a 14-8 lead and, after Huntingdon used a 4-1 stretch to get it back to 15-12, the Petrels exploded with a 9-1 run to give themselves set point at 24-13. They eventually won the set 25-18.

Up 2-0 already, the Petrels were rolling, and they put the match away with some exceptional play to start the third set. The home side outscored Huntingdon 15-4 to start the stanza, essentially putting the set away before Huntingdon had even found their footing. The Petrels earned set point at 24-10, and put the match away with a 25-16 victory in the third set.

Sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims led the way with 13 kills and a .381 hitting percentage, while junior outside hitter Brianna Chin added 9 kills on a .615 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Grace Holder passed out a match-high 21 assists.

The Petrels will be back in action on Saturday, when they host Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m. in their first home game of the conference season. Millsaps will be in for another conference matchup on Sunday at 1 p.m.
