The Oglethorpe volleyball team took on the Millsaps Majors Sunday afternoon in the second of back-to-back conference matches this weekend. Millsaps edged out the Stormy Petrels after four close sets, winning 3-1.
The first set consisted of five ties, as neither team could grab a big lead. Tied 18-18, the two teams swapped points, before Millsaps finally jumped in front with a 6-2 run and won 25-21.
After dropping the first set, the Petrels came out energized in the second, grabbing a 17-12 lead with several 3-point runs. They expanded it to a 21-14 advantage with another 3-point run, and that was part of a 6-1 stretch that got them a set point at 24-15. Oglethorpe kept attacking, and was able to maintain the lead, and win the set 25-16.
The third set was another close affair, seeing seven ties. The Petrels used a 4-0 run to flip an 18-16 deficit into a 20-18 advantage, however, Millsaps quickly tied it. It was still tied at 23-all, but the Majors scored the final two points of the stanza to take it. It was a hard-fought finish, but the Majors were able to take the set, 25-23.
Millsaps carried that momentum into the fourth, as they won that one 25-14, and finished the match 3-1. They started the fourth on a 9-2 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 11 ponts during the set.
Freshman setter Grace Holder and sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims were bright spots for the Petrels. Sims hit .423 for the match, posting 13 kills and 11 digs, while Holder poured in 20 assists. In addition, freshman setter Emma Williams had 11 kills and 10 assists, while freshman outside hitter Aija Mines added 10 kills.
The Petrels will hit the road next weekend, heading out to Memphis, Tennessee to take on Rhodes Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern, and then on to Conway, Arkansas, to face the Hendrix Warriors Sunday at 1 p.m.
