The Oglethorpe volleyball team was hosted by the 8-5 Rhodes Lynx Saturday afternoon at the Mallory Gymnasium in Memphis, Tennessee. After three hard-fought sets, the Stormy Petrels fell to the Lynx, 3-0.
The first set was a heartbreaker for the Petrels. After overcoming an early 14-8 deficit, Oglethorpe was able to tie the game at 20-20 with a 12-6 run. The two clubs then swapped points before finding themselves tied again at 24-24. Despite a good effort, the comeback try came up just short, as Rhodes scored two straight points and clinched the first set, 26-24. A first-set victory might've allowed the Petrels to relax and work their way into the match, but it wasn't to be.
In the second set, the Petrels battled to stay close with the Lynx, and were able to do so for the majority of the set. Rhodes began pulling away near the end of the set, grabbing a 22-17 advantage, and eventually secured the 25-18 win.
The final set was another impressive come-from-behind effort, as Oglethorpe went down early 10-4, but fought back with a 12-7 run to pull to within a point, 17-16. Solid play from Rhodes was enough to stop the Petrels comeback attempt, however, and they went on to take the third set, 25-20, and sweep the match, 3-0.
Junior outside hitter Brianna Chin led the way for the Petrels, recording 10 kills and 12 digs in the contest. Freshman setter Emma Williams contributed a solid performance as well, finishing with 20 assists. Sophomore Jacoby Sims recorded 10 kills and a .391 hitting percentage for the match.
The Petrels will be back in action on Sunday, as they travel to Conway, Arkansas, to go against the Hendrix Warriors at 1 p.m. Eastern. The Petrels will be looking to improve on their 3-12 overall and 1-5 SAA marks.
