The Oglethorpe volleyball team had a rough evening Friday in Birmingham, Alabama, where they fell 3-0 to the homestanding Birmingham-Southern Panthers in the penultimate game of conference play on the season. The loss dropped the team to 5-19 on the season overall and 2-11 in SAA play.
The Petrels never could get their feet under them at the outset of any set. In the first set, the Panthers took a 9-2 lead early, then proceeded to embark on a 7-1 run to extend their advantage to 17-5. The Petrels scored three straight to make it 17-8, but Birmingham-Southern responded with five straight to edge out to a 22-8 lead. Oglethorpe went on another run of four straight, but the Panthers closed out the set, 25-13.
The home side jumped out to a 24-8 lead in the second set before the Petrels could finish off back-to-back points. Oglethorpe did score two straight at that point, making it 24-10, but the Panthers won, 25-10.
A 3-2 Oglethorpe lead early in the third set quickly turned to a 9-3 BSC advantage after the latter went on a 7-0 run. A few moments later, the home side went on another 5-point run to extend their lead to 15-6. The Petrels cut it to 16-10, but that was as close as they would get. Birmingham-Southern wound up finishing off the set, 25-12.
Sophomore libero Hailee Bugg wound up leading the Petrels with 10 digs on the evening, while freshman setter Grace Holder led her team with nine assists. Sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims led the Petrels with eight kills.
The Petrels will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they continue to Jackson, Mississippi, to take on Millsaps at 1 p.m. Eastern. That will conclude the SAA regular season, but they'll still have non-conference matchups against Marvyille (Tennessee), Salem, and Washington and Lee before entering the SAA Tournament.
