The Oglethorpe volleyball team saw its 2018 SAA campaign come to an end Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, with a 3-1 loss to the homestanding Millsaps Majors. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 5-20 on the season overall and 2-12 in SAA play.
The Petrels got the match off to an outstanding start. They got ahead of the Majors early with an 8-3 run, then used a 6-1 run to extend the lead to 15-9. A Millsaps run brought them back to within two, 18-16, but Oglethorpe closed the stanza out with a 7-2 run to win it, 25-18.
That was the last set the Petrels would win, however. They started well in the first set, pulling out to a 7-2 lead. However, a 7-2 run from the home side put them even with the Petrels, 12-12. Oglethorpe used a 4-1 minirun to edge back ahead, 16-13, but Millsaps used an 8-1 run to take control of the set, 22-18. Oglethorpe made it 22-20, but the Majors closed it out 25-20.
Millsaps built a 5-2 lead to start the third set, but the Petrels used a 4-1 run to come back and tie it at 8-8. They pulled ahead 10-9 a couple points later, but the home side responded with an 8-2 stretch to take a 17-12 lead. the Petrels responded with a big run of their own, outscoring the Majors 9-1 over the next stretch to build a 21-18 lead. The home side ran off five consecutive points, though, to swing the set back in their favor, 24-22, and set up a set point. Oglethorpe came back with back-to-back points to tie it 24-24, and staved off two more set points, but never earned a set point of their own. They wound up losing 28-26.
Oglethorpe took a 3-0 lead to start the fourth set, but Millsaps responded with a 7-2 run and took a 7-5 lead. The Petrels used a 5-1 run to vault into a 10-8 lead, but Millsaps used a 7-1 stretch to take a 15-11 lead. Three straight Petrel points cut it to one, 15-14, but the Majors responded with three straight of their own to go back ahead by four. From there, the two teams traded points, which suited Millsaps, who cruised to a 25-19 victory, clinching the match.
Junior outside hitter Brianna Chin collected 12 kills and 18 digs for the Petrels, while freshman setter Emma Williams recorded 21 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore libero Hailee Bugg led all participants with 31 digs.
That concludes the Oglethorpe SAA campaign, but they'll still have a few non-conference matches to play before the SAA Tournament. They'll take on Maryville in Tennessee on Tuesday at 6 p.m., then head across town to Emory for the Emory National Invitational on Friday. There, they'll battle Salem and Washington & Lee.
