The Oglethorpe volleyball team saw their losing streak extend to five matches with a 3-1 loss to the homestanding Maryville Scots in Maryville, Tennessee, on Tuesday night. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 5-21 on the season.
The Petrels got the match off to an excellent start on Tuesday. They fell behind 3-0 early, but came back to tied the score at 4-4. A 4-0 Maryville run gave them a 10-6 lead, but Oglethorpe responded later in the set with a 7-0 run of their own to vault into a 17-14 lead. After back-to-back points from the Scots, the Petrels responded again and, this time, put the set away. They embarked on an 8-2 run and finished off the set, 25-18.
Things did not go well for the Petrels the rest of the evening, though. They lost the second set, 25-15, then saw Maryville turn around an early 5-1 deficit with a 12-1 stretch in the third, taking a 13-6 lead. Oglethorpe worked their way back into the set with a 5-1 run, making it 14-11, and they got it as close as 18-16, but the Scots outscored the visitors 7-3 over the remainder of the set to win it, 25-19.
The fourth set began in very tight fashion, and the score was tied at 8-8 in the early-going. However, a 4-point run gave the home side a 12-8 lead and they slowly pulled out to an 18-12 advantage. From there, Maryville went on a 7-3 run to end it with a 25-16 victory in the set and a 3-1 win in the match.
The Petrels were led on the evening by sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims, who recorded 12 kills and 11 digs for the match. Freshman setter Grace Holder put up 20 assists while sophomore libero Hailee Bugg led the team with 21 digs.
The Petrels will be back in action on Friday as they head across town for the Emory National Invitational. They'll take on Salem at 11 a.m., then battle Washington and Lee at 1 p.m.
