The Oglethorpe volleyball team faced an uphill battle Friday evening at the SAA Tournament in Mount Berry, Georgia. The seventh-seeded Stormy Petrels were taking on No. 2 seed Birmingham-Southern in the tournament's opening round at Berry's Cage Center. The Petrels fought valiantly, but succumbed to the Panthers 3-0. Oglethorpe completes their season at 6-23 for the year.
Things did not start well for Oglethorpe, as the Panthers jumped ahead in the opening stanza with a 14-6 run, allowing them to take a 15-7 lead. The Petrels responded with back-to-back points, but the Panthers pulled away over the remainder of the set. They outscored Oglethorpe 10-2 and closed it out 25-11.
The Petrels started better in the second set, pushing out to an early 6-4 lead. A 5-1 Birmingham-Southern run made it 9-7 in favor of the Panthers, but Oglethorpe tied the set back up 9-9. The Panthers went on a 4-point run from there, though, and then continued with an 8-2 stretch to take a 21-13 lead. Birmingham-Southern finished with three straight points and won 25-16.
The third set featured more of the same. BSC ran out to a huge lead, building a 12-1 advantage to begin the stanza. The two teams traded points for awhile from there, and the Petrels made as close as seven late, cutting the Birmingham-Southern lead to 24-17. The Panthers finished off the set 25-17, though.
The Petrels were led by junior outside hitter Brianna Chin, who recorded six kills while hitting .545. Freshman setter Emma Williams totaled 10 assists while sophomore libero Hailee Bugg came up with a match-high 19 digs.
