The Oglethorpe volleyball team found themselves in a tough match against the Berry Vikings Wednesday evening, and fell 3-0 to the No. 6 visitors at Dorough Field House. The Stormy Petrels dropped the three sets 25-15, 25-18 and 25-15. With the result, they dropped to 5-13 overall and 0-8 in SAA play on the season.
The nationally-ranked Vikings got off to a hot start, pushing out to a 4-0 lead. They then finished three straight points and extended their advantage to 9-3. The Petrels responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to just 10-8, but Berry ran off five straight after that to push their advantage back out to 15-8. They continued to expand it, using another 4-1 stretch to build a 21-12 edge. They eventually pulled away to a 25-15 win.
Berry got out to a 9-4 lead early in the second set, then extended their run to 11-3 overall and took a 12-5 lead early in the stanza. Oglethorpe responded with an 8-2 run to fight back into it and pull to within a point, 15-14. However, the Vikings struck back with a 6-1 run and retook control of the set 21-15. They pulled out to the 25-18 win from there.
The Petrels hung with their top 10 foe for the first half of the third set. Berry took three-point leads a couple of times, but Oglethorpe fought back with three straight to tie it up at 8-8. The Petrels were still within one at 11-10, but the visitors embarked on a 14-5 run to close it out and won 25-15.
Senior libero Alex Prots led Oglethorpe with 16 digs on the evening, while sophomore setters Grace Holder and Emma Williams each recorded 11 assists. Junior middle hitter TaKorya Green tallied three total blocks, as well.
Oglethorpe will be back in action Saturday and Sunday, when they hit the road again for SAA play. They'll head to Jackson, Mississippi, Saturday to take on Millsaps at noon Eastern, then continue to Alabama to go against Birmingham-Southern Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
