Volleyball drops 3-0 decision at Birmingham-Southern

The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell to the homestanding Birmingham-Southern Panthers 3-0 in Alabama Sunday afternoon, dropping the three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-16. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 5-15 overall and 0-10 in SAA play.

The Petrels pulled out to a 6-4 lead early in the first set, but the Panthers would soon take control of the proceedings. After scoring back-to-back points to take their two-point lead, the visitors wouldn't score consecutive points again for the remainder of the set. Birmingham-Southern outscored Oglethorpe 21-5 over the rest of the stanza to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Oglethorpe began the second set on a 7-2 run, but the three straight points they scored leading up to that would serve as the final time they'd win consecutive points in the second set. The Panthers outscored the Petrels 22-6 at the height of the run and went on to win the set 25-14.

The home side began the second set on a 5-0 run, extending their cross-set run to 28-7 without the Petrels finishing back-to-back points. Oglethorpe finally put an end to that when they went on a 5-2 mini-run to cut the third-set deficit to 7-5. Birmingham-Southern went right back out on an 8-2 run, though, pushing their lead to 15-7. Oglethorpe fought their way back again, this time with an 8-2 run of their own, cutting it to 17-15. The Panthers took control and put the match away from there, though, outscoring the visitors 8-1 for the remainder of the contest and taking the third set 25-16.

Senior defensive specialist Alex Prots led the way for the Petrels with 15 digs, while sophomore setter Grace Holder added 10 assists.

Oglethorpe will be back in action for their final SAA home weekend of the season Saturday and Sunday. They'll take on Hendrix at 1 p.m. Saturday before hosting Senior Day Sunday at noon against Rhodes.
