Volleyball blanked 3-0 at Sewanee

The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell 3-0 to the homestanding Sewanee Tigers Saturday in Tennessee, losing the three sets by scores of 27-25, 25-10 and 25-18. With the loss, the Stormy Petrels fell to 5-18 on the season overall and 0-13 in SAA play.

The Petrels proved very competitive in the first set, eventually falling by just two points. The two sides went back and forth over the opening points of the set, but Oglethorpe took a 13-8 lead after embarking on a 9-2 run midway through the stanza. Sewanee hit right back, though, going on a 5-1 run to push to within a point, 14-13. Oglethorpe answered with a 5-1 run of their own to nudge back out to a 19-14 lead, but the Tigers turned the set on its head with a 7-1 run , taking a 21-20 lead. Oglethorpe went back ahead 23-22, but Sewanee obtained set point at 24-23. The Petrels scored consecutive points to take a 25-24 lead for a set point of their own, but the Tigers finished off the final three points of the set to win it 27-25.

Oglethorpe went up 3-2 in the second set, but it was all Sewanee after that. They embarked on a 13-1 run to take a 15-4 lead, then followed up with a 7-1 run which gave them a 24-9 lead. The Tigers went on to win the set 24-10.

The two teams traded points early in the third set, and Oglethorpe took a 9-8 lead after going on a 5-1 run early in the stanza. However, Sewanee went on a 12-3 run thereafter to take a 20-12 lead. The Petrels answered back with three straight points of their own to cut the Tiger advantage to 21-16, but the home side finished off the match from there, winning the set 25-18.

Sophomore setter Grace Holder recorded 13 assists for the match, while senior libero Alex Prots added 13 digs. Junior middle hitter TaKorya Green led the team with eight kills and totaled four blocks.

The Petrels will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Danville, Kentucky, to go against Centre at noon. After that, they'll return home to take on Agnes Scott Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the final match of the regular season.
